Keeping the Legacy Alive: Why Your Support Matters

For generations, the Emancipation Celebration in Thomaston and Upson County has been more than an annual event. It has been a gathering of families, neighbors, and communities coming together to remember freedom, honor those who came before us, and celebrate a heritage that continues to shape who we are today.
Behind every parade, festival, banquet, and community gathering are people who believe this tradition is worth preserving.
And the future of this celebration depends on that same spirit of community support.
A Tradition Built on Community
Historic newspaper accounts dating back to the 1800s reveal something remarkable about the Emancipation Celebration: community participation has always been at its heart.
In 1885, residents were invited to bring baskets of food and join in the annual celebration. By 1895, newspaper reports described organizers collecting contributions to help cover the expenses of the event. In 1899, local merchants were recognized for their generous support.
These historical accounts remind us that the celebration was never the work of one person alone.
It was built through the generosity, dedication, and participation of people who understood the importance of coming together.
Today, that same spirit continues through the work of the Emancipation Committee of Upson and the many individuals, families, businesses, and organizations who support its mission.
Why Your Support Matters
Preserving a tradition takes more than remembering its history. It takes people willing to invest in its future.
Each year, the Emancipation Committee of Upson works to bring the community together through celebrations, educational opportunities, cultural activities, and programs that recognize the contributions of those who have helped shape our community.
These efforts require planning, resources, volunteers, and partnerships.
Your support helps make these activities possible while ensuring that younger generations have opportunities to experience, understand, and appreciate the meaning behind the celebration.
When you support ECU, you are helping preserve something that belongs to the entire community.
Become a Sponsor: Partner in Preserving Our Heritage
Local businesses, organizations, and individuals have an opportunity to make a meaningful difference through sponsorship.
Sponsorships help support two of ECU's signature occasions: the annual May 29th Emancipation Celebration and the Heritage Awards Banquet.
The Emancipation Celebration brings the community together through traditions such as the parade, festival, and special programs.
The Heritage Awards Banquet provides an opportunity to recognize individuals whose service, dedication, and contributions have made a positive impact.
ECU offers five sponsorship tiers for each occasion, allowing supporters to explore different levels of participation.
Becoming a sponsor is more than providing financial assistance. It is an opportunity to stand alongside the community in celebrating its history and helping carry its traditions forward.
Make a Donation: Every Contribution Has Meaning
Not everyone can become a major sponsor, but every contribution matters.
Donations help ECU continue its mission and support the activities that bring the community together throughout the year.
Whether large or small, a gift represents a commitment to preserving our heritage and supporting the work that keeps our traditions alive.
The value of a contribution is not measured only by its amount, but also by the spirit of generosity behind it.
Volunteer: Give the Gift of Your Time
Some of the most meaningful contributions cannot be measured in dollars.
Volunteers are an important part of the Emancipation Committee of Upson's work.
From helping prepare for events and assisting during celebrations to supporting fundraising activities and working behind the scenes, volunteers contribute their time, energy, and talents to make each occasion possible.
Volunteering is also an opportunity to connect with others, build friendships, and take an active role in preserving our community's heritage.
Whether you have a few hours to offer or would like to become more involved throughout the year, your willingness to help can make a difference.
Support Our Fundraisers: Small Acts, Lasting Impact
Throughout the year, ECU organizes fundraising initiatives to help support its celebrations and community programs.
Participating in a fundraiser is another simple but meaningful way to contribute.
Purchasing an item, sharing a fundraiser with friends and family, or encouraging others to participate can help extend the reach of these efforts.
Community support has always been part of the Emancipation Celebration's history, and today's fundraising activities continue that tradition of people working together toward a common purpose.
Inspiring the Next Generation
One of the greatest reasons to preserve our traditions is to ensure that they are not forgotten.
Through initiatives such as Youth Alive, ECU encourages students in grades 9–12 to become involved in community service, leadership, and cultural heritage.
When young people participate in these activities, they gain opportunities to learn about the past while contributing to the future.
Supporting ECU also means supporting opportunities for the next generation to discover the importance of community involvement and carrying forward a meaningful legacy.
The Future of Our Tradition Begins With Us
The early organizers of Upson County's Emancipation Celebration could not have known exactly how the tradition would evolve over the generations.
But their commitment to gathering, remembering, and celebrating helped establish something that would endure.
Today, we have the opportunity—and the responsibility—to continue that work.
Whether you become a sponsor, make a donation, volunteer your time, participate in a fundraiser, or simply encourage others to attend, your involvement matters.
The Emancipation Celebration is not only about remembering those who came before us. It is also about what we choose to preserve for those who will come after us.
Together, we can honor the past, celebrate the present, and keep the legacy alive for generations to come.
